Random musings from a Granite City
Be in a music video

A couple of years ago Mr Hibbett did the same for his Xmas song
I am in it around the 30 sec mark
This made me happier than you could believe. So he is doing it again. Go on, do a little bit of good and submit a video. You never know!

Radiohead - Street Spirit

I am by no means a big Radio head fan but I love this song. The video amazed me when I first saw it, not entirely sure why now! It is still eerie though. Also for some reason the guitar reminds me of a trailer for the first Silent Hill game.

A wee stream of consciousness

The song had just ended and the phone music player switched to another random track. As the bass line started he had already zoned out. The last track had left a sadness within him that the new music was unable to breach. It had Bern a song that he had heard many times before, he had even danced and hung along in numerous clubs over the years but today it had made him sad.
Maybe it was the time of year when the excitement of the new year begins to fray slightly and glimpses of the reality start to show through? Maybe?
His fingers pressed the touch sensitive screen and replayed the previous track. There it was again. A shadow falling over him. His brain started to run different scenarios to try and latch into a reason, any reason, however tenuous they were. Still nothing seemed to fit.
Overall he was not sad, quite the opposite but the feeling was strong and he felt his resistance to it crumble. The song had reached the chorus and that’s when it hit.
It was a reminder of earlier times when the world seemed a different place to what it was now. A time where everything and anything was possible. Yet years on that youthful optimism had gone unfullfilled, passed over for seemingly more important issues.
Where was that version of him gone? Had he been swallowed up by time and forgotten about? Left alone with only that song as his tether to the present?
Possibly?
A sigh escaped his lips as he saw the taxi pull up outside the house. He was getting old and it was time to take the next step. They were waiting for him and this was one appointment he could never be late for.

Strangers in Paradise

Strangers in Paradise, pocket edition 3, Page 157. Simply powerful, emotional and moving writing. I love comics.

Burst Fiction randomness part the first

“If you could travel back in time, back tto when you were a lad.  Would you give your younger self any advice for their future?”

To be honest it was not the conversation starter I expected when I had went to work that day but it was a Tuesday morning and outside the rain was hammering off the windows.  That made it as good a day as any to be asked strange questions.  Putting a hand against the coffee vending machine, I looked round, somewhat wearily at my co-worker.  His face was lit up as he waited for my reply.

“To be honest it is not something I have ever given much thought to.”

It was not the answer he was expecting, that much was obvious from the flaring of the eyes.  He moved closer to me and dropped his voice.  It seemed only polite to bend closer to him to better listen.

“That does surprise me, to be honest I thought that you of all the people in here,” his arm waved generally behind him indicating the office drones, “would be the one who would have thought about a situation like this.”

I smiled and took my now full paper cup from the machine.  “Sorry to dissapoint you.” I volunteered,  “Why do you ask?”  As I moved backwards, he moved forwards keeping the distance constant.  He continued speaking in an almost whisper like manner.

“Never mind.  You see a very strange thing has happened to me recently.  I think my future self has come back in time to warn me about something.”

Great, I thought, as if Tuesday could not start any weirder, now I have to extricate myself from a mad co-worker and then avoid him for the rest of the day.  Sipping the warm, bitter liquid I started to think about how to best proceed.  He looked genuinely spooked as he continued.

“I saw him last night, standing outside my house.  I put it down to tiredness.  Then this morning he walked past me.  I’m telling you, I am very worried that something bad is going to happen. Especially now.”

That was it, I was hooked.  He was indicating the car park outside the window.  I glanced down the four floors to the concrete and saw him standing there.

It was definately the weirdest start to a Tuesday for some time but not as weird as it was going to get later.

2012 and all that

I really should get back into regular writing this year.  Even if I only do some short burst fiction every couple of days, that would keep the creative juices flowing and bubbling.

The first one will appear in a wee bit.  it came from a walk to work i had when i walked past a man who looked very much like a friend of mine but a lot older.
